Communities
Poverty in Eastern Europe has not really declined with the fall of communism and in many countries a sorry level of corruption prevails.
Those who suffer most are the elderly for whom the pensions are insufficient to meet their needs. Mission Without Borders in partnership with various churches has started Feeding Centres in those churches. By combining our resources we are able to provide a warm and comforting environment for people to come for their one hot meal of the day.
In all our field countries we are slowly but steadily expanding this essential social service that the governments of those lands are unable to supply. With the base being in a church, there is the opportunity to introduce these people to the love of God for all people and to teach them truths from the Scriptures that they have been denied from hearing all their lives.
- In Bulgaria we have managed to introduce a vocational course as well, so that even these old people are able to learn computer skills. As a general rule in Bulgaria half of the beneficiaries come to the centre on the recommendation of the Mayor’s office who have knowledge of the most needy in their areas.
- In Bosnia our oldest centre has been operating in Mostar for many years and sadly the need has not decreased.
- In Ukraine our two centres include provision of food for “street kids.” Once again this environment provides an opportunity to help them in other ways than just the necessary food.
- In Romania a centre opened in 2008 provides meals for a needy village. There are so many who meet the eligibility test that we rotate families every 3 months so that all have a turn at receiving good nutritious meals. This centre is beside a new church MWB opened in Romanii-de-Sus during December 2007.
- In Moldova our centres are expanding and helping desperate people.
- Albania operates centres as well as assisting churches and other organisations who also attempt to cater for these needs.
One reason for these needs actually appearing to increase is that many Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), have now pulled out of these lands to provide their emergency aid elsewhere. However Mission Without Borders, as a mission is pledged to remain and help meet people’s real needs as long as these needs remain.
