Scholarships

Our Scholarship Programme in Romania

Education means progress and development. However, access to education is limited for children from disadvantaged or challenged backgrounds. Poor but capable students are denied the opportunity to become great doctors, teachers, artists, sportsmen/women or scientists and they do not reach their life’s full potential. They become resigned to the frustration of contemplating what might have been.

A scholarship provides the possibility for teenagers to achieve their dreams and it enables them to gain a much desired and distinctive education in the field in which they have talent or ambitions to pursue.

Besides influencing the student’s present and future, scholarships have a great influence on society by enabling acquisition of knowledge and values by tomorrows leaders.

Scholarships not only put food in people’s hands but also give them the tools to earn their living and who knows? – Help some one else in the process.

If they needed to have a certain textbook, these teenagers did not have the means to buy it – even if it cost very little. Aside from such financial resource issues, children in the Homes lacked someone to believe in them and encourage them that they were able to succeed. Teenagers from poor families had the family’s emotional support, but nothing more. To their parents, sending them to school was a huge challenge, especially when the family was supported by a single parent, or when they were unemployed, going through sickness or when they had five or more children.

In order to bring long-term improvement in the children’s lives, Mission Without Borders Romania responded to the needs expressed by students who were in desperate situations of not being able to start or continue their education.

Although there were no specific titles or criteria, Scholarships were implemented in Romania in 1995, as Special Projects and now they are a separate operation.

Today, Mission Without Borders offers scholarships to teenagers from poor families and from state Homes, but we would love to be able to offer much more.

These scholarships cover costs related to

  • School taxes
  • Accommodation and meals
  • Transportation
  • Supplies.

While costs vary from one student to another, the scholarships can cover all costs during studies, or a partial amount.

When selecting a future beneficiary of the project, the following criteria are assessed:

  • Student’s ability to pass the exams
  • Student’s desire to graduate
  • Student’s willingness to follow internal procedures
  • Student’s material possibilities
  • A testimonial from the coordinator, staff from the Home, or pastor

The student’s religious affiliation or ethnic group is disregarded when providing scholarships. Through this project, Mission Without Borders wants to demonstrate Christian love and care for people. Students are not required to repay the scholarships.

We want to maintain close relationship and involvement between the student, the local church and MWB. Through this project, MWB would like to motivate and enable beneficiaries to stand on their own. Best work results and personal satisfaction depend on their personal effort and commitment  and our intention is that these foundational work ethics provide a platform from which future graduates will succeed in the career they have chosen.
